Safeguarding at Sherborne Tennis Club

Safeguarding

I’d like to introduce myself to you in my capacity as welfare officer in charge of safeguarding at the club.

I live in a lovely village, near Sherborne, am married and have two grown up boys. I moved to the West Country from Wales to start my teaching career and, with 30 years as a primary school teacher under my belt, I find myself with the safeguarding role at STC.

I started at the club, as a mum bringing her 4 year old son every week for tennis coaching – no matter the weather! 18 years on my son can make his own way to tennis and I now find myself playing in team tennis, having coaching and I love the social side of the club.

My welfare officer role is to ensure that STC is a safe club for everyone to play in. To ensure I have the correct safeguarding qualifications I am DBS checked, I undertake annual training as well as attend workshops and any other available courses. Myself, alongside the committee, want to reassure you that we endeavour to make the club a friendly, inclusive and safe environment for all to come and play the sport we love.

The LTA provide us with guidance and support in our roles and responsibilities. They provide us with county and regional safeguarding officers which we can turn to, if ever required. You will find an information board, in the clubhouse, with details on how to contact myself, Dorset Safeguarding team and the LTA if there was a need to raise a welfare concern. If a concern should come to me, I am to immediately contact the LTA safeguarding team and the matter will be handed over to them to investigate. I will always be kept abreast of information and outcomes, during concern proceedings.

We are keen that the club and parents work together to ensure that our young people and vulnerable adults are safe. LTA guidelines stipulate that all under 13 year olds are to be handed to, and collected from, the coaches for their coaching sessions. We are asking that children are not to be dropped off in the carpark and make their own way up to the courts. Also, children under the age of 13 are not permitted to play without adult supervision outside of their coaching sessions.

If you have any queries or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kindest regards

Ali Sparks
